Concert Logistics and Etiquette
- Take care of your body (your instrument!) prior to every concert. Avoid dairy products or any other food or drink that causes phlegm. Be well fed (but not stuffed) and rested. Be clean, neat, groomed, and fragrance-free.
- At call time, we will assemble on the risers and warm up. Make sure you are on time; if call time is 6:45, that doesn't mean you're walking in the door at 6:45, that means I give the downbeat at 6:45.
- At ten minutes to show-time, we will assemble in an off-stage area in riser formation and, once assembled, file out to the stage area and ascend the risers. Don't bring anything with you that you're not using to sing with, tambourines and eyeglasses are OK, cell phones and pagers are not.
- The pastor or other designated individual will introduce us to the audience, after which I will come out on stage and assume the podium.
- I will not address the audience or introduce pieces unless a piece really needs some explanation. We will dive right in. As we are singing, remember to smile with the eyes, not the mouth. Remember your "hum face!"
- Whenever there is applause, I will step off the podium and acknowledge the choir, any soloists, and the accompanist. Soloists bow with the head. As you are being acknowledged, show appreciation for the audience and accept and respect their applause. Don't converse with each other or otherwise take your attention away from the moment.
- If you ever feel faint on the risers, SIT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. Do not try to come off the risers or let yourself fall over people. Prevent light-headedness by making sure you are well fed and rested, etc. Also, don't lock your knees, remember your relaxed, balanced singing posture.
